Weighted tuning forks have two primary modes of application.
Typically, most tuning fork suppliers provide weighted forks that are intended to be used for both applications. However, in reality the design requirements for these two applications require different characteristics to be optimally effective.

General Purpose
Like other forks on the market, these weighted forks can be be utilized for both acoustic and tactile applications. These are great forks for general purpose use; however, they do not excel in optimum performance for either application.

The weighted tactile tuning forks are designed with special features that maximize the effectiveness of tactile vibration transmission. Great for treatment of nerves and muscles.
Pro Weighted – Acoustic
The weighted acoustic tuning fork is designed with features that maximize the acoustic pressure wave for applications such as hearing the tone or generation of binaural beat frequencies.
Let’s use the example of footwear to help describe the requirements. We all have different forms of footwear as each design offers its own unique benefits. For example we have running shoes, hiking boots. soccer cleats, and rainboots to name just a few. One could wear rainboots for all occasions however they would not always be well suited to the conditions. Our desired activity and existing conditions play an important role in our selection of footwear. The pro series weighted forks offer design features that are ideally suited for either acoustic or tactile applications.
Pro Weighted – Tactile
The weighted tactile fork utilizes a unique design of weight that aids in maximizing its effectiveness of transmitting tactile vibrations.
Instead of being made from aluminum, the weights are fabricated from stainless steel which is then plated to give it a beautiful appearance.
Since the stainless steel is a higher density than aluminum, it allows the weight to be smaller in size while providing the same dampening effect.
The small surface area of the weights generate lower amplitude acoustic pressure waves in the air than would a larger weight. Since less energy is expended in creating acoustic pressure waves, this energy is conserved resulting in longer sustain times for transmission of tactile vibration through the stem of the fork.
The rounded edges on the weights aid in the aerodynamics as they vibrate through the air. This feature reduces drag which results in conserving energy and contributing to longer sustain times.
Specialized interchangeable tips are inserted into the end of the handle to aid in directing the tactile energy into the body.
The weighted acoustic fork utilizes a unique design that aids in maximizing its effectiveness in creating acoustic pressure waves.
The weights of this fork are larger in diameter than what is used on the tactile fork. This creates a larger surface area in contact with the air as it is vibrating. This larger surface area results in the formation of higher amplitude pressure waves that we hear as sound.
This fork does not utilize end tips, as they are not required for the application of acoustic pressure waves.
